The family of an Alzheimer's patient who was raped by a nursing home worker filed a lawsuit against the facility Monday. The suit alleges nursing home abuse by the worker and holds the home responsible for not providing job training.

The Alzheimer's patient was a resident of the facility for three years and has since been removed. Her family now says she may not be alone. Since she suffers from dementia, there's no telling how long she underwent the abuse.

Nursing home administrators are defending their center. They say they performed a background check on (the worker), and he had no criminal history.

While it is always a difficult decision to put a loved one in a nursing home or assisted-living facility, there are certain steps family members can take to help ensure they are selecting a place that will care properly for their loved one.

If possible, talk with your loved one about the kind of care they are looking for. Then consult your local or state long-term care ombudsman who should be able to help you gather more information about facilities in your area.
The US Dept of Health and Human Services also has a valuable website where families can compare nursing homes in their areas.

It is of course important to visit any potential nursing home and note bed availability, talk to residents and resident family members. State inspection reports can also be found at the Nursing Home Compare website.

The National Citizen's Coalition For Nursing Home Reform is one of many websites that provides valuable resources for families considering nursing homes as an option for their loved ones.
